Alexandra Ghimisi is a Romanian-born contemporary painter (born 1977), based in the United Kingdom.

She graduated from the National University of Arts Bucharest in 2008 with a BA (Hons) degree in Decorative Arts and Design. This was a significant milestone in her artistic journey, as it provided her with a formal education and helped her to develop her skills and artistic vision.

Artist Statement

My artwork invites the viewer to reflect on their connection to the natural world and the role that nature plays in shaping our identity as human beings.

My artistic practice focuses on the connection between nature’s cycles and human emotions, exploring how the changing seasons influence our perceptions of colour, mood, and time.

Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, I use a semi-abstract style to interpret nature’s transformations, capturing its energy and constant flux.
Each piece I create tells a unique story, whether it’s the rugged coastline a serene countryside or abstract flowers.

My work explores the intricate relationship between humanity and nature, offering fresh perceptions of landscapes and encouraging a deeper connection with our environment.
Through my work, I aim to evoke a sense of continuity and transformation, reminding viewers that each season, much like life, is part of an ongoing cycle of renewal and change.

My artworks highlight the dialogue between humans and nature, encouraging viewers to reflect on the importance of a more harmonious and symbiotic relationship with the natural world.

My Inspiration

My artistic journey is rooted in a deep connection to memory, heritage, and emotion. Drawing from my Romanian background, I find inspiration in the textures of tradition, the rhythms of music and dance, and the subtle interplay between people and nature. These influences weave their way into my work, creating abstract narratives that are both personal and universal.

Colour is my primary language. I work intuitively with bold, saturated palettes to spark the imagination and evoke emotional landscapes—shifting from dark to light as a metaphor for hope, renewal, and transformation. Each piece becomes a visual dialogue between internal and external worlds, where forms emerge fluidly, shaped by movement, memory, and mood.

I am particularly drawn to the dynamic tension between opposites—warm and cool tones, stillness and energy, harmony and discord. Through layers of texture, line, and colour, I explore how these forces coexist, clash, and eventually find resolution on the canvas. My abstract compositions are not planned in advance; rather, they evolve through an ongoing process of experimentation and emotional response.

Ultimately, my practice is a space of discovery—an exploration of identity, intuition, and the quiet conversation between the conscious and the subconscious. I invite the viewer to bring their own experiences to the work, to pause, reflect, and connect with something unspoken yet deeply felt.
