Week 1 – Getting to Know Your Tools & Materials

Begin your winter art journey by exploring the tools and materials that will support your creative process. This week focuses on understanding the characteristics of acrylic paint, choosing the right brushes, and preparing your painting surface for the best results. You’ll learn about stay-wet-palette and how acrylics behave, how to control them, and how to set up a strong foundation before starting your painting.

Week 2 – Introduction to Composition & Sketching

Learn the importance of sketching as a way to record ideas, explore compositions, and develop visual thinking. Practise quick winter-themed sketches and begin using your sketchpad as your creative companion throughout the course.

Week 2 – Colour mixing

Explore how to create new colours based on the primary colours and white. Focus on mixing clean colours, subtle temperature shifts, and avoiding muddy tones. You’ll explore cool tones, soft transitions, and the foundations needed to create coloured greys.

Week 3 – Perspective Basics for Landscape Painting

Learn how to establish strong perspective in your winter scenes. Work with horizon lines, vanishing points, and the placement of elements to create believable distance. Develop depth in your landscape using tonal values, soft transitions, and layering techniques. Discover how light interacts with snow to create dimension and atmosphere.

Week 4 – Painting techniques & Mark-making

Discover how to bring energy, personality, and expression to your artwork through a variety of painting techniques and mark-making methods. Learn how different brushstrokes, textures, and tools—both traditional and non-traditional—can transform simple shapes into lively, contemporary marks full of movement and character. This approach encourages freedom, experimentation, and the development of your own unique artistic voice.

Week 5 – Creating Texture

Discover how to enhance your paintings by creating textured surfaces with acrylic gesso. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to apply gesso in expressive ways—using brushes, palette knives, and unconventional tools—to build relief, pattern, and movement. Then, explore how to paint on top of that texture, allowing the raised surface to influence your brushstrokes, colour choices, and overall composition. A perfect technique for adding dimension, energy, and a contemporary feel to your acrylic artwork.
