On this course, you’ll be guided step-by-step through the process of creating expressive, contemporary landscape paintings using acrylics. You’ll begin by exploring the fundamentals—such as how to handle acrylic paint, mix colours effectively, and use brushes and other tools with confidence. As the course progresses, you’ll learn how to compose a landscape, build layers, and create depth and atmosphere using a variety of painting techniques. You’ll explore the process of creating expressive, contemporary landscapes in acrylics in a relaxed and supportive setting. Whether you’re completely new to painting or looking to build on your existing skills, this course will help you feel more confident using acrylics. Through a combination of tutor demonstrations and practical exercises tailored to your needs, you’ll learn techniques to bring your landscapes to life while developing your own creative style.

Week 1 – Introduction & Exploring Expressive Landscapes

Get inspired by expressive landscape artists and begin experimenting with colour, mark-making, and loose brushwork. You’ll create quick studies to explore mood, atmosphere, and personal style.

Week 2 – Composition & Simplifying the Landscape

Learn how to break down complex landscapes into simple shapes and strong compositions. You’ll plan your main painting, exploring focal points, depth, and dynamic layout.

Week 3 – Building the Underpainting & First Layers

Begin your main piece by blocking in large shapes and establishing bold colour relationships. You’ll use loose, confident brushstrokes to set the overall mood and energy of your landscape.

Week 4 – Texture, Layering & Developing Expression

Add depth and interest through layering techniques such as glazing, dry brushing, and alternative mark-making. This session focuses on creating movement and expressive texture in land, sky, and water.

Week 5 – Refining Shapes & Enhancing Atmosphere

Strengthen contrast, refine key elements, and adjust colour harmony to enhance mood. You’ll learn how to guide the viewer’s eye using light, shadow, edges, and subtle detailing—while keeping the work expressive.

Week 6 – Final Details & Group Reflection

Complete your expressive landscape, adding final marks, highlights, and finishing touches. The course ends with a supportive group review, celebrating progress and discussing personal artistic development.
